The only thing that counts is faith

I am reading a new book, The Hole in our Gospel, by Richard Stearns. Man, why can't I leave good enough alone? This book is killing me. The moment you start to feel good about yourself and your ministry someone sends you a free copy of a book to "bless" you. Well I'm blessed all right. I can't even talk about the book without crying. Among other things, it talks about children in Africa whose parents have died of AIDS and now they are left to care for their younger siblings. Children responsible for children. You know that was never God's intention. But, all in all, I need that book right now. I have drama going on in my life and sometimes you need a diversion even if it hurts just a little; If for nothing else but perspective. When I read something like this, if I were honest, I would have to say that what really hurts is my lack of perception to have seen this long ago. Why does it take me so long to see the pressing needs along side of the abundant provision given to us by our Lord?

We all are so spoiled. We love ourselves way too much. Our standard for measuring our progress is so jaded towards a comparative approach.  (We can always find somebody doing less than ourselves.)  We announced an incredible service opportunity Sunday to help a handicapped lady be able to have access to her own bathroom. Only three people signed up...and I was one of them! Wow! Let's just say, God still has a work to do in all of our hearts. But He is faithful. He was clear when He said He came to serve and give His life a ransom for many. Soon we will embrace that for ourselves. There is no greater expression of spirituality than to serve those in need. Are we really ready for God to "open the eyes of our heart?" ...I'm getting there.

This past week I went to my first ARC Conference (Association of Related Churches) in Raleigh, NC. It was great to see so many young couples pastoring and planting churches all across Amercia. Their stories brought back memories of our early days of planting CCC back in the early 80's. Even though the times were hard it seems like time blew by and though I would not want to repeat those days, they are some of my best memories. These young couples are paying the price to plant their churches as well. Most start out in schools and have to set up and tear down each Sunday morning. It was inspiring to see the emerging generation so passionate for Jesus and willing to pay the price to see the gospel go forward.

The goal of ARC is to plant 2000 churches by the year 2020. It was also encouraging to see these young churches reach impressive numbers so quickly. Many churches under 10 years old were averaging over 1,000 in attendance. They have learned their lessons well and know how to make the hard decisions to keep growth happening at every stage. At 58, I learned a few things from these young warriors that will help us move into the future as fruitfully as possible. I think I might go back next year. I like being with these young pastors. I might even take some of you with me.
