I am reading a new book, The Hole in our Gospel, by Richard Stearns. Man, why can't I leave good enough alone? This book is killing me. The moment you start to feel good about yourself and your ministry someone sends you a free copy of a book to "bless" you. Well I'm blessed all right. I can't even talk about the book without crying. Among other things, it talks about children in Africa whose parents have died of AIDS and now they are left to care for their younger siblings. Children responsible for children. You know that was never God's intention. But, all in all, I need that book right now. I have drama going on in my life and sometimes you need a diversion even if it hurts just a little; If for nothing else but perspective. When I read something like this, if I were honest, I would have to say that what really hurts is my lack of perception to have seen this long ago. Why does it take me so long to see the pressing needs along side of the abundant provision given to us by our Lord?
We all are so spoiled. We love ourselves way too much. Our standard for measuring our progress is so jaded towards a comparative approach. (We can always find somebody doing less than ourselves.) We announced an incredible service opportunity Sunday to help a handicapped lady be able to have access to her own bathroom. Only three people signed up...and I was one of them! Wow! Let's just say, God still has a work to do in all of our hearts. But He is faithful. He was clear when He said He came to serve and give His life a ransom for many. Soon we will embrace that for ourselves. There is no greater expression of spirituality than to serve those in need. Are we really ready for God to "open the eyes of our heart?" ...I'm getting there.
